For some, the hair can be at its most beautiful during pregnancy – the estrogen level goes up stimulating hair growth and preventing hair loss.  This sudden boost of hormones also revs up the metabolism, bringing nutrients to the scalp.  Vitamins taken by pregnant women does as much good to the mane as it does for the baby.

You can expect your crowning glory to be gloriously lush during pregnancy.

Fast forward to about 3 months after giving birth, and you notice that your luxuriant locks are falling off.  You see clumps of hair in your hairbrush and in the bathtub.  You get frantic…a little paranoid maybe.

You start thinking about diseases and cancer.  However, before you go running to your doctor for diagnosis there are a few things you should know about hair growth and hair loss brought about by pregnancy.

Hair loss is a normal, healthy process.  Ten percent of your hair is at a resting state, while ninety percent is continuously growing.  Every two months, the resting hair falls out to give way to new growth.  This is the life cycle of the hair.  During pregnancy, this cycle is interrupted by hormonal changes in the body when estrogen levels shoots up.

After pregnancy however, the amount of estrogen recedes to its normal level.  This signals all the overdue resting hair to fall off, sometimes all at once.  Excessive hair loss after giving birth is a type of hair loss called "Telogen Effluvium”.  But no worries, Telogen Effluvium is not a permanent condition and will only last from about one to six months.

Another type of hair loss experience by women (and by men) is called “Androgenetic Alopecia".  For women, this usually happens during the menopausal stage.  This is rather a serious case of permanent hair loss, which leads to total baldness.

There are a couple of treatments offered to reduce, halt or reverse hair loss.  For permanent hair loss, there are medications, baldness treatments and follicular unit transplantation procedures.  Different people will always have different needs.  Ask your physician to determine the type of treatment that will be most effective for you.

As for hair loss related to pregnancy, the best thing you can do is to wait it out.  It may take about eight months before full hair growth is attained.   Stress will not help.  So calm down and try not to think too much about it.  In this case, patience is really a virtue.
