Do you know that each makeup and beauty product possesses a shelf life? You may think that you can use your lipstick or blush-on for as long as it does not empty out.

However, this is not the case since you have to dispose of the products once their shelf life expires. The products that you are using last differently from the other. It is important for you to know how long you should keep on using your makeup product. This will help you avoid skin conditions, like skin irritation or rashes.

According to the FDA, cosmetics are created to last for one to three years when stored in normal temperatures. The shelf life of these products also depends on their composition, the process of packaging and preservation. The expiration date of a product is just for the company's compliance with the regulations that are being imposed on them. However, the safety and effectiveness of cosmetics expire before its said date. This goes especially when the makeup product is exposed to heat or sunlight.

In order to help you know when to throw out your cosmetics, the following tips will give you a hint:

  • Concealer – you can use this up to a period of one year.
  • Face powder – the translucent product deteriorates slower than the pressed ones. You can keep on using this for as long as two years.
  • Blush-on – this type of makeup lasts only up to six months.
  • Gel cleansers and cream – these have similar shelf life as with concealer. They last for one year.
  • Eyeliners – you can continue using this cosmetic up to 3 years. However, you should keep it sharpened regularly for smoother and easier application. This will also keep the bacteria from thriving on the tip of the eyeliner.
  • Eye shadow – this also lasts for 3 years.
  • Mascara – this product should be thrown out after 3 to 4 months, since bacteria are more likely to settle within the tube.
  • Lip liner and lip colors – the shelf life of these products vary according to companies. Generally, most products last for as long as four years. But when your lipstick smells bad, you should throw it out, even if you have only been using it for one year.
  • Nail polish – when you store this cosmetic properly, it can last up to 2 years. On the other hand, some last only for a year. If ever the oil and the color are separated, this is a great time to throw your nail polish out.

When it comes to your makeup tools, like your brush, you should replace them within 2 to 3 months of use. This way, you can prevent yourself from being affected with skin rashes due to bacteria.
