Facial massage is a beauty treatment used to slow down the process of aging. When you massage the face, the tired muscles of the face relax, resulting in healthier and seemingly younger skin. Aside from this, a facial massage is also helpful in relieving stress and headaches.

A face massage can be done at home or in the spa or health clinic. It can be done on its own or as part of an entire regimen of treatments, such as whole body massage. Facial massage can be done using the hands or special mechanical massage equipment.

There are basically two kinds of facial massage: those used in Western cultures and those used in Eastern areas of the world. Western facial massage is mostly utilized as a form of relaxation and helps alleviate stress; meanwhile, Eastern facial massage is typically utilized as a form of alternative treatment for various diseases.

THE WESTERN STYLE OF FACIAL MASSAGE
The Western style of facial massage can either be part and parcel of a facial treatment or a full-body treatment. Typically, western massage utilizes a gliding motion know as effleurage. The strokes of the massage are directed upward, helping lift the ski and the muscles. The client’s face is first cleansed, after which it is massaged using a lotion or a cream. The scalp is also massaged in a circular manner. Typically, Western-style massages end with the application of a special kid of lotion.

THE EASTERN STYLE OF FACIAL MASSAGE
Meanwhile, the Eastern style of facial massage is part of a full body treatment. The Eastern style of facial massage is typically incorporated in various treatments, such as acupressure and shiatsu. Pressure points found on the face are utilized. The theory is that by applying pressure on these points, the qi, or life force, becomes unobstructed and can flow freely throughout the body. As opposed to the Western style of facial massage, the Eastern style of facial massage does not use any cream or lotion on the face.

WHO CAN GIVE FACIAL MASSAGES?
Various individuals can give facial massages. These include estheticians, massage therapists and cosmetologists who massage face using different techniques and intruments. In order to be able to give facial massages, an individual must first be licensed. He or she must be trained in the art of massage, and will have to pass a licensing examination. Other individuals are also skilled in the art of skin care and cosmetology. For those practicing the Eastern style of facial massage, certain institutions abroad, including the United States, offer training and certification courses for these specific treatments.
Facial massage is both a beauty treatment and an alternative form of treatment for various medical illnesses. It is marketed as a way to correct various imbalances in the internal organs of the body, including the gallbladder and the liver. At the same time, it also relieves headache, stress, anxiety, and promotes good well-being. If nothing else, facial massage can make you feel relaxed and comfortable for at least a whole hour.
