Admit it, even if you already know the bad effects that the sun can have on your crowning glory, you still can’t stay away from its magnificent warmth.

Studies show that frequent exposure to the sun’s hot rays can cause long-term damage to your hair. This is often noticeable with people who have faded hair color, brittle and dry hair, or split ends. You probably feel that your days of fun-in-the-sun are now numbered, but this does not really have to be the case. With proper hair care and protection, you can still continue to enjoy a wonderful summer day without worrying about the damage that the sun can potentially cause your hair.

There are really a lot of practical ways to protect your hair from the sun’s harmful rays. First of all, you can wear a fashionable hat or put a stylish bandana over your head which will serve as a barrier to direct sunlight. This simple measure may yet prove to be the most effective way of protecting your tresses from potential damage. If wearing a hat or a head scarf is not your style, a substitute could be putting your hair up in a bun or twist. By doing this, less hair is exposed and the healthiest part of your hair, which is the part closest to the scalp, is protected from the heat.

You can also put deep or intense conditioner on your hair before you expose yourself to the sun. A less-expensive alternative to this would be coconut oil, jojoba oil or even olive oil. Conditioner and oil locks in hair moisture which keeps the hair constantly hydrated. Using hair care products with SPF formulations will also help protect your hair in the same way that sunscreens protect your skin. In addition to this, avoid hair products that contain alcohol as these products speed up the drying effects of the sun and can lead to damaged hair.

If you regularly use a blowdryer or a curling iron to style your hair, you might want to try to give it a rest during the hot summer months. Allow your hair to dry naturally or with the help a cooling fan. However if you really cannot do without them, spray on hair product which is specifically designed for heat-styling. These products normally provide protection from damage caused by direct heat.

It would also be a big help to be very religious when it comes to trimming the ends of your hair. Hair, similar to our skin, also suffers from the effects of aging. Cutting your hair every six to eight weeks will help in keeping it in a healthy and shiny state and will definitely keep the split ends at bay.
Finally, drinking lots of water will definitely do wonders to your hair. This keeps the hair constantly hydrated and moisturized which in effect makes it more resilient and less-prone to dryness and damage.

Protecting your hair from the sun does not have to be tedious and time-consuming. Simply follow these short and simple steps and rest assured that you will continue to enjoy fabulously healthy and shiny hair no matter what the season is!
