Since the seventies, skin tanning has become the usual scene in our beaches. The color of tan seems to have attracted a large portion of the population because of its exotic flavor, making it the desired skin color. However, recent developments in medicine have pointed to the harmful effects of ultraviolet rays on the skin, which sometimes even lead to diseases such as skin cancer.

The inventing of skin tanning salons even without exposure to the sun has also been a hit among tan lovers. But recent studies have proved that this practice poses a health risk as well. Thus, caution is offered the person who prefers to be tan.

As mentioned earlier, there are several risks when going into getting a suntan. Sunbathing, which is usually the most popular tanning method, has effects on the skin. The ultraviolet rays of the sun have made scientists invent other ways to keep the skin beautifully tan. But with each method comes a disadvantage.

Take for instance, tanning pills. They don’t expose to ultraviolet rays, but they make you prone to hepatitis, causing some yellowish color in the eyes. Tanning accelerators are also a clever invention but wait until you know that this actually causes nausea, headaches, and itchy skin. Tanning beds are another option the person who doesn’t want to exposure to the sun. However, this poses a skin cancer risk, as the skin is also being exposed to UV rays. Aside from that, eye inflammations, skin irritations, changes to the immune system and sunburn may also follow. Some might say, well, we can use lotions. But did you know that sun tan lotions can cause the skin to turn yellow and thus, worsen skin conditions. What about spray tanning booths, which we often see in television? Simple, they expose the eyes and mouth to dihydroxyacetone, a very harmful chemical that can cause irritations.

This leaves you asking, “What then is left for me to do? I want to be tan.” The answer is quite simple but it will require you a great deal of honesty. You have to have a sort of self-assessment to determine several problems. Do you have any skin disorders? Knowing your skin type is usually the key in knowing what tanning method is best for you. What amount of risk are you willing to take in this matter? How much money are you willing to spend? Concerning tablets, does your doctor recommend it? Experts believe that the safest tanning method is sunless skin tanning products, if not bronzers.

After answering these questions, there also some things you must do before tanning. First, like mentioned above, when it comes to any form of medication, your doctor must be consulted first. Second, perhaps you should also read more about skin cancer to at least keep you away from tanning beds. Third, test the lotions or bronzers in a small part of your skin before deciding which is best for you. You can also ask recommendations from friends who are into tanning as well. They could ease you the burden of decision-making. Of course, protect your skin from the harmful rays of the sun. The best way in all these is to read more first about the tanning method you prefer.
