Causes of Thinning Hair in Women

Considered as everybody’s crowning glory, the mere thought of losing one’s hair or even sheer thinning hair is one frightful reality, especially for women! Our hair basically grows about half and inch each month with a growth phase of two to six years per hair. During that period, the hair takes a break for sometime, gets removed and a new strand comes out again from the follicle where it came from.

This cycle continues until we grow old. Typical, a person sheds between fifty and a hundred strands of hair daily. More than this quantity is considered female hair loss.

Thinning hair in women usually occurs in different manners:

Autoimmune disorders result in thinning hair.
Childbirth. Hair loss usually follows after pregnancy
Crash Dieting or weight loss
Surgery
Emotional trauma
Thyroid disorders
Anemia. Women with heavy menstrual periods losses hair
Persistent ailments
Stress
Post-menopausal condition
Protein/calorie deficiency
Fatty acid/zinc deficiency
Bulimia
Malabsorption
Hypervitaminosis A
Connective tissue disorders like lupus
Hair styling treatments. Hair chemicals like dyes, bleaches, tints, straighteners, relaxers and permanent waves frequently done cause thinning hair.

There are also drugs/medicines that are some of the causes of hair loss in women, like the following:

Blood thinners or anti-coagulants
seizure medications
Gout, colchicines and alopurinol medicines
Blood pressure drugs like b-blockers or diuretics
anti-inflammatory drugs
Cholesterol lowering prescriptions
Mood altering medicines
Chemotherapy
Thyroid medications
Oral contraceptives
Diet pills, over dosage of vitamin A and street drugs such as cocaine

Notwithstanding these list, lest not we forget the role played by genetics in thinning hair in women which may originate either in the mother or father’s side of the family.

On the other hand, other experts claim that based on microscopic analysis of thinning hair, about 80% of affected women have severe dirt build up in their hair roots. This is due to the hair products they use for styling which are dirt attractants.

Women suffering from thinning hair should consult a doctor to determine the root cause and how it can be treated or prevented. Undergo a microscopic hair analysis. There are also hair growth stimulants available in the market today to bring back the lushness of your hair. Aside from these, there is the hair transplant, use of herbs and essential oils and a number of medical procedures for you to choose from if all else fail.
