Dry skin is one of the most common problems we have today. Basically this is the result of low oil and moisture produced by our sebaceous glands. Women, especially those below 35 years old, have simple dry skin due to lack of natural oils.

Fine lines, enlarged pores and sagging skin that comes with aging emanates from complex dry skin resulting from lack of oil and moisture.

Dry skin can be attributed to the following factors: genetics, diet, nutritional deficiencies, environmental factors, too much chemical and cosmetic use and even use of harsh soaps when bathing.

For dry skin care, herbs and essential oils in aromatherapy can be transformed into beauty formulas which could greatly help solve your problem. Below are some techniques for you to try at home for skin care:

  • You can prepare your own skin mask by making a paste out of six ounces of yoghurt (unflavored), some finely crushed almonds, two teaspoon honey and wheat germ oil. Massage the paste on your face for twenty minutes before washing it off with cold water.  The crushed almonds scrubs out dead skin and cells, the honey binds the mixture into paste while the vitamin E-containing wheat germ wards off bacteria.  Another recipe for this consists of one egg, one teaspoon honey, ½ teaspoon olive oil and a small amount of rose water.
  • Having a dry skin produces chapped and broken lips. This could be treated by heating ½ cup almond or grape seed oil with two teaspoon melted beeswax and ½ teaspoon alkanet root. Remove the roots by straining the oil and put in eight to ten drops and natural flavoring as well as three drops of vitamin E oil.
  • If you have extra dry hands, you can make it beautiful again with sandalwood, rose or chamomile oils with hazelnut, avocado or evening primrose as hydrating oil. Massage the mixture on your tired and rough hands.
  • You can like prepare your own natural hand moisturizer by mixing wheat germ oil with your favorite essential oil and gently massaging it on your hand.
  • You can make a morning skin cleanser by putting in one egg yolk, one teaspoon each orange juice and olive oil, a few drops of rose water and lime juice and apply this to your skin.

The most commonly used essential oils for dry skin care are chamomile, geranium, hyssop, lavender, patchouli, rose sandalwood and ylang-ylang.
