What are hair extensions? These are hair pieces that can be attached to your natural hair and your scalp. They can enhance the thickness of your hair and also the length. The most popular ones that are used are strands; these are small clusters of about 30 pieces of hair.

And wefts are slightly larger curtains of hair that is joined at the top and free flowing at the ends. The best wefts are usually hand made not machine made. Braids and dreadlocks are also popular which are pre-wound.

Some of them are synthetic and some are made out of human hair.

You should choose a hair extension that will match you own hair. They come in lots of varieties and can be pre highlighted, pre colored and pre permed with curls or a body wave.

Depending on how it was attached you may need to have your hair extension re-done after 6 to 8 weeks or it can even last up to 4 months. Re-attaching your hair will always be necessary because our natural hair always continues to grow, the bonding agent will eventually loosen and you will need to re adjust it and refresh your hair style and hair appearance again.

How to apply hair extensions for strands is to woven, clipped or glued to your natural hair.

If the hair extension is clipped it can be removed easily anywhere and anytime. If they will be glued a variety of bonding agents will be used and care must be given to protect the scalp and natural hair.

How to apply hair extensions for wefts is your stylist will make a small row or weave in your natural hair and sew the weft to this weave.

This application does not use any hair chemicals. For braids it is usually woven with your own hair and no hair chemicals are used also in this application.

Hair extensions can be shampooed, brushed and styled same as what you do with your natural hair.

But do not try to alter their color, unless you are an expert in hair extensions. The most important thing to do with your hair extension is to be gentle with it so that it will preserve the bonding attached to it. You should preferably use a soft bristle brush and brush out tangles from the bottom ends up towards your head.

Avoid using any silicone based products or conditioners on the extension.
