Razor bumps are red welts in the facial area that has been freshly shaved accompanying the razor burns.

These are skin rashes that may be unsightly to look at and are itchy in nature. But before you get overwhelmed with the plague that these razor burns are capable of doing at least you may want to know that there are already preventive steps to avoid razor burns.

Basically, you can begin the prevention of razor burns by using cosmetic products that contains active ingredients. One ingredient that has a staying power against the razor bumps is salicylic acid.

This acid works as a moisturizer to the skin. It also exfoliates the skin form dead skin cells so that the pores are cleaned up and relative infections of some sort are avoided remarkably. In the same way, you also must use an aftershave lotion or moisturizer that has salicylic acid in its contents. Dabbing the shaved area with an aftershave solution will mean that the salicylic acid stays on the area practically the whole day.

On the other hand, it is best to stay away from cosmetic products that contain a great deal of alcohol. The alcohol ingredient has a drying effect to the skin in such a way that the pores are closed thus, clogging the hair follicles to cause the ingrown nails to be more stubborn than ever. Instead, use shaving creams that are subtle in scents and are compatible to your skin type. There are available non-acnegenic shaving lotions in the pharmacy that accommodates the men with the more sensitive type of skin.

To dramatically stop razor bumps from occurring, you must give due emphasis on the surface of your skin. The texture of your skin can be improved greatly by exfoliation. By doing this, the dead skin cells are removed which are the common among men with ingrown hairs. A simple and gentle facial scrub can be applied unto the shaved area with help of salicylic acid as well.

Aside from the much needed angular cutting of hair, it is also best to modify the way you shave. The physicians put it clearly that shaving closely to the skin is one of the main reasons that triggers razor bumps. Closely shaving will subject the hair stubs to be cut closely to the skin. The higher risk there is that the hair stubs are trapped inside the hair follicle encouraging the birth of another ingrown hair.

The common practice for men who are suffering with razor bumps is that they tend to squeeze and pick the shaving bumps. It is not advisable because you will just aggravate the razor bump case. If your skin shows some signs of irritation or redness reactions then it is high time that you use some antimicrobial treatment or some mild local antiseptic to ease the stinging effect of the razor bumps. The antiseptic will also numb the area of the red spotting and will diminish the chances of relative infections. In any consolation, the common aftershave in the market today has a combination of teat tree oil minerals and iodine that is perfect in stopping the spread of razor bumps in the affected area.
