In the past, women lorded and dominated the spas and health saloons to attend to their vanities ranging from hair to skin care.  It was only a few years ago that men started playing an active role (rather, started to take care of themselves) in their body’s needs. It was macho for a man to forego shaving for a day or two, or to have the rugged, muscle look.

Not anymore. Men, black men in particular, now turn to products that might cause other men to laugh at: moisturizers, lotions, and cleansers.

Most black men think that traditional skin care was using soap to get the job done. That’s partially true. It just depends on what type of soap they use. To get the best care for the skin, the proper soaps must be used. Not just the bargain basement fruit soap sold on discount at the supermarket.

Black men are now more aware of what it takes to take care of their skin. Yes, some still wash the traditional way but ir could also be that they their skin is not hard to maintain.

A good rule to remember in black skin care is that to never underestimate the small things or small details. One example is the use of soaps that have too much cologne or other chemicals which dry and make the skin itch. Black men should switch to liquid soaps that are lightly scented or use chemicals that don’t cause allergic reactions.

The sun is the second thing to look out for. Prolonged sun exposure causes the skin of black men to age faster and could result in brownish spots, sagging of the skin and skin splotches. Unless everyone lives below the ground, the best defense is to apply a mild sun block formulation that has SPF20 or more to successfully keep out those UV rays.

Aside from the lotions and salves, a balanced diet and proper food can cause the skin to shed its dead cells faster and replenish them with new ones. Eating plenty of vegetables and fresh fruits bring much needed nutrients to the skin. Eating foods rich in vitamins further fortify the resilience of skin. Vitamins A and E are especially ideal for dry skin among black men.
Getting the proper amount of sleep is a very useful thing that black men should realize in skin care. Most black men think that working overtime and beyond only affect the eyes and not the skin is incorrect. The skin needs to spend time recuperating and it does so more when the body is at a state of relaxation. Yes, the skin does heal while we go about our everyday chores but slowly.

The weather is another thing to consider in black men skin care. Cold weather like winter makes skin dry and scaly because the cold decreases circulation and perspiration. This leads to less shedding of the skin and makes the skin seem tough and rough.

Moisturizing is one step that black men can do to really help keep their skin in good shape. Once regarded as womens stuff, the moisturizer can actually be the black man’s best friend (next to the razor of course). All one has to do is get the moisturizer best suited for their skin type and make sure it contains the nutrients and minerals the skin would need. The main task of the moisturizer is to keep the skins moisture inside for once it is gone, the skin dries up.

Black men now take an active role in their skin care. Black men skin care doesn’t have to be expensive. However, one just needs to be aware of their skins needs.
