Cellulite is not gender specific, which means it occurs for both men and women, although it does occur more often in women.

In most cases, cellulite begins to show when a person reaches his or her late twenties but it may occur even as early as puberty.

Although the cause of cellulite has not yet been fully understood, a number of factors have been determined that helps cause it. For instance hormones have been proven to be a major factor in the formation of cellulite. Studies have shown that increased levels of estrogens play a key role in the increase in cellulite growth. Genetics is also a factor. There are people more prone to cellulite growth than others.

Another major factor, one that can be controlled is a person’s diet. Diets rich in fat, salt, and alcohol, and low in fibre, make for a greater chance of cellulite growth. It may also be a side effect of some medications. It also seems that an unhealthy lifestyle also promotes cellulite growth. Smoking, stresses, sedentary life, all seem to contribute to an increase in a person’s cellulite growth.

There are many products today that are supposed to remove or lessen cellulite growth. There are cellulite treatment pills, lotions, creams and essential oils available and some may work but others may not.

There are also natural methods on how to get rid of cellulite. Here are some tips on how to get rid of cellulite naturally:

  • Eat a healthy regular diet. Eat more foods high on fibre such as fruits and vegetables and less food high on fat and salt. Go for natural ingredients instead of processed foods. Limiting your junk and fast food intake also helps.
  • Drink less alcohol and plenty of water. Water is the most natural detoxifier of our body, helping filter out toxins from processed food, which increases cellulite. Drink at least 8 glasses water a day
  • Stop smoking. It is not only good for reducing cellulite but also promotes better over-all health.
  • Exercise regularly, the opposite of smoking, it not only helps reduce cellulite but also has other health benefits. With a brush, mitt or just your bare hands, massage the areas regularly with cellulite making long sweeping movements in the direction of your heart.
  • For people who take medications the increase cellulite as a side effect, find out from your doctor if there are other alternative medications that will not cause it. It may be possible to substitute your present medications with herbal or homeopathic alternatives.
  • Take a steam bath. Making your body sweat using steam not only reduces cellulite but also promotes better blood circulation and a healthier skin. Simple ways of doing this is by turning on your hot water when taking a shower or dip in the tub and close all doors and windows. Do this at least 15 minutes a day ones or twice a week. Put a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in your hot water for even better results.

There are natural creams and essential oils that help reduce cellulite. For instance, massaging a mixture or combination of rosemary and fennel essential oils with sweet almond on the areas of the skin affected seem to help reduce its appearance. Cheap lotion mixed with ground coffee powder also seems to do the trick. What is important is the process of massaging the concoction deeply in to the skin following the massage strokes discussed earlier.
