Since ancient times, honey has been considered to have many health benefits.

Even today, it is included in many herbal products and is even concentrated in to capsules as a health supplement.

But aside from this, it has also been used to nourish and protect our skin. Cleopatra has been known to regularly bathe in milk and honey to keep her skin smooth and silky. Nero’s Wife, Poppea, has also been noted to use a lotion mixture of milk and honey to keep her skin’s youthful glow.

When production of skin care products started to boom in the 18th century, almost all concoctions of lotions, creams and other cosmetics included honey. Even during that time the time-past knowledge of the youthful skin honey brings was past on and most people look for it in the formulation of skin care products.

Even today, honey is still very popular as an ingredient in skin care products. This is because, aside from the old tales of its benefits, there are now scientific evidence of the actual benefits it brings in the care and protection of our skin.

  • Honey is a natural product. Produced by honeybees from the nectar of flowers, it is one of nature’s wonder products that can by utilized for its benefits as is. Even in the modern world of chemicals products, production of honey is still done the natural way.
  • Due to its natural components, honey can practically do no harm to your skin. It is in fact recommended for people with sensitive skin, even for babies because of its anti-irritant property. This is probably one reason why most baby skin care products include honey in their formulation.
  • Another reason why it probably does no harm and even protects our skin is because honey has been found to be an anti-microbial agent. In its pure and most natural form, honey can be used to effectively treat minor abrasions and burns.
  • It also helps moisturize the skin. Honey has been found to be a humectant, attracting and retaining water. This property helps in keeping moisture in the skin keeping it hydrated and thus giving it a healthy glow.

Protection from UV rays is very important in order to maintain a healthy skin. Most people use sun block lotions and creams to ward of these UV rays when staying outdoors for long periods of time. Trouble is most of these products also dry our skin easily. Again a better substitute is honey, which has been found to be good at protecting skin from UV rays and helps keep skin moisturized. But there are also sun blocks with honey, which further proves its sun protection powers.

For that all natural healthy skin care regimen, here are some things you can do. Try adding a ¼ cup of honey in to your bathe water when soaking in your tub. Instead of a ten-minute mudpack, try a mixture of 2 tablespoons of honey and 2 teaspoons of milk. For a great all natural lotion 1 teaspoon of honey, 1 teaspoon of vegetable oil and 14 teaspoon of lemon.
