One of the first things people will notice is your fingernails. No matter how well you are dressed or how good you look, the condition of your finger nails can make or break you. It is, therefore important that, in your health regimen, you include ensuring that you have healthy fingernails.

It is not difficult to maintain healthy nails. Neither is it difficult to check if something is possibly wrong with them. After all, your nails are attached to the most used parts of your body: your hands and feet. Since that is the case, there are several occasions even just in an hour that you can observe them.

In observing your nails, note if there are any discolorations, or unnatural whiteness. These are surefire ways of detecting if there is something wrong with them. Also, note if you are feeling any sort of pain in the skin area connecting to the nail. This probably means that, at its simplest, your cuticles are pushing against your skin, or at its worst, you have an infection.

One way to maintain healthy fingernails is your diet. Make sure that you eat foods that are rich in calcium and Vitamin D. Another good tip is to regularly trim your nails, and remove excess cuticle which could cause you discomfort. You can either have a professional handle this for you or, if you are on a budget, you can even do this yourself! You just need to have the right tools to do this. For basics, you will need orangewood sticks (to gently push the cuticles, remove dirt from underneath your nails, and remove excess nail polish), cuticle removers, finger and toe nail cutters, emery boards (to smoothen out rough edges of your nails), nail polish remover, nail polish (if you want some color in your life), and curettes. If you want to get a bit fancy, consider such items as a paraffin heater, hot oil machine, pedicure tub, finger bowl, and the like. With these items, you can have the “salon experience” and keep your nails healthy in the process.

When you experience discoloration or discomfort, do not take it for granted. Do not hide with nail polisher! Specifically for diabetics, make sure that you are sensitive to any discolorations or wounds in the foot and nail area. This could be a sign of a serious problem. Again for diabetics, make sure that you regularly trim your nails, taking care not to overdo it lest you wound yourself. Also, do not wear tight fitting or high-heeled shoes, no matter how beautiful they make your legs look.  It is important that you do not take these signs for granted. Go see your doctor immediately.

Nails that are not well maintained are not only aesthetic liabilities; they also cause pain. Ingrown toenails are very painful to walk with and, left untreated, could cause infection that would make you regret not paying closer attention to the needs of your nails. Even finger nails, when left unattended to, could seek revenge by making it painful for you to type, write, play ball, and the other things you normally can do.

Care for your nails for when they are healthy, then you can say that your health is complete.
