Honey is a sweet liquid with a high viscosity. It is extracted from honey bee hives and is derived from the nectar of flowers.  Honey is a very sweet natural product due to its constituents, which are known as monosaccharides, namely glucose and fructose.

Honey is low in water content and hence, is an unsuitable medium for the growth and survival of microorganisms.
Honey is a mixture of monosaccharides (which are sugars) and various other compounds. It is high in carbohydrate content and is rich in several vitamins and minerals. It is also rich in antioxidants. On the basis of its origin, honey can be monofloral or polyfloral.
Honey is used for various skin care purposes, some of skin care tips using honey are as follows:
  • Honey may be applied on the face as a moisturizer on account of its water retaining property.
  • Honey can be used as an anti ageing solution as it has antioxidants that help revitalize your skin, making it look younger.
  • Honey has antibacterial properties and as such, may be used as a cleansing agent, instrumental in relieving you of pimples and acne.
  • You may also use honey as a lip balm and also as scar lightening therapy.
As you may see here, honey has a wide number of applications on the skin to improve the overall health of your skin and treat various skin problems. As such, the quality of honey used for application on skin is crucial.
Honey may be unprocessed or processed. The honey which is available in the market is processed honey. Freshly extracted honey which has not been subjected to various processing techniques is unprocessed honey. On the other hand, processed honey is subjected to different processing techniques like pasteurization, ultra filtration, whipping, and many other others.
The processing of honey is essential to remove the impurities present in natural honey. Honey in its natural form contains certain impurities like dust, wax, and remnants of pollen. Also, unprocessed honey consists of yeast, which may lead to fermentation and spoil the constituents of honey, thereby making it unfit for consumption or application on the skin. Processing kills these yeast cells, thereby preventing the honey from fermenting and spoiling.
As such, it is advisable to use processed honey over unprocessed honey. Processed honey is usually available as packaged honey in the market. As the honey available in market is free from all impurities, it is perfectly safe to use it for skin application. However, do keep in mind that sometimes, processing may make honey devoid of its essential nutrients.
