Dry Scalp – A dry scalp occurs when the sebaceous gland, which is responsible for maintaining hair moisture, shine and luster, doesn’t lubricate hair adequately. In such a situation, hair is deprived of natural oils and loses moisture. Prolong dryness results in dry scalp.


Dry scalp is a common occurrence, especially in winter, and when exposed to fluctuating temperatures like; hot summer air and air conditioning, or cold winter air and central heating, disrupt moisture balance of hair and resulting in a flaky scalp. Symptoms of a Dry Scalp – Dry scalp is often mistaken and treated for dandruff because of similar flaky scalp symptoms. Unfortunately, treating dry flaking scalp as dandruff only aggravates the condition. Dry scalp is characterized by small dry flakes of skin, itchy scalp, brittle hair, split ends, and hair fall. Causes of a Flaky Scalp – Dry scalp can be a result of any of the following: • Poor diet, dehydration, fatty acids deficiency, excessive intake of alcohol and caffeine, etc. causes excessive scalp dryness • Excessive use of hair dryers, harsh shampoos, excessive shampooing, harsh hair products, excessive processing of hair, etc. is known to cause dry and flaky itchy scalp. • Environmental damage due to exposure to heat, UV rays, pollutants, fluctuating temperature, etc, all harms hair and increases dryness Treatment for Dry Scalp – While there is no cure for dry scalp, there are ways to control the conditions and its symptoms. Begin by addressing the causes of flaky scalp before embarking on a dry scalp treatment. Controlling dry scalp causing agents will help speed treatment. Natural Remedies – Natural dry scalp treatments are wholesome and effective. They allow for long term healing. • Squeeze out a spoonful of ginger root and mix with one teaspoon of sesame oil and one teaspoon of lemon juice. Apply the solution to scalp and leave on for half an hour before shampooing • Mix a teaspoon of camphor to half a cup of coconut oil and massage onto scalp before going to bed. Shampoo hair next morning. Herbal Hair Products – Substitute your chemical based hair products for milder herbal hair products. There are a number of brands in the market that provide gentle, chemical free products, full of beneficial ingredients like shea butter and tea tree oil, known remedies for a dry scalp. Cool Showers – Hot water pulls out even more of moisture from your scalp. Switch to cold showers or wear a shower cap to protect your hair. Balanced Diet – A balance and hydrated diet plan is essential for healthy hair and scalp. Drink lots of water and include foods rich in fatty acids. This includes fish, whole grains and leafy greens. You should also cut down of foods that worsen dry scalp symptoms. This includes sugars and yeast.
