What is a Bee Sting

A bee sting, in the strictest sense of the word, refers to the sting of a honey bee, bumblebee, or sweat bee. In a more general sense, it can also include the sting of the hornet, wasp, or yellow jacket. The stings of all these species are quite painful and cause dread in many.

It is vital to differentiate a bee sting from insect bites whose venom or toxins are different from the bee stings. The body’s reaction to a bee sting differs significantly from one species to another. A bee sting can cause allergic reactions that can be anaphylactic, and possibly fatal. Honey bees release pheromones that trigger other nearby bees to attack. Honey bees foraging for nectar or pollen will not sting, but will do so if they feel that their hives are threatened.

Bee sting treatment

The primary thing to do is get away from the bee or the bee hive; otherwise, you may attract other bees to seek you out and sting. The first bee sting treatment is to remove the sting itself. The sting has to be removed immediately without scraping. It is alright to pull with your fingers. Any delay, even of a few seconds, can cause more venom to be injected. Once you remove the sting, the pain and swelling will subside with a cold compress. You need to look out for symptoms of a hypersensitive allergic reaction such as itchiness, raised welts, redness, and shortness of breath. If you do notice any of these symptoms, you will have to seek emergency medical help. In persons who are non-allergic, there are local reactions like swelling, redness and pain. However, the pain will soon go away and the swelling may last for a day to a week. If the reaction exists for more than a week and the area of reaction is over 7-10 cm, it is necessary to seek medical attention. It is better to avoid scratching when there is an itching sensation as it could worsen the problem. One useful bee sting remedy is to chew a few peppercorns to reduce the effect of the poison in the body. Applying honey and lemon on the skin is a useful remedy for a bee sting. Some of the other home remedies for a bee sting are to apply a Fuller’s earth pack on the skin, or turmeric powder which will soothe and cool the inflamed area. Aloe vera gel is a natural bee sting remedy that will heal and soothe the stung area. Applying a slice of onion or using calendula lotion will relieve the pain and heal the bee sting.
