A skin rash in the form of ring is known as ringworm. There are no worms involved in this rash but is caused by different types of fungi. Different types of fungi depending on their location on the body cause ringworm rash. The causes of ringworm rash are malnourishment, poor hygiene, and contact with people having ringworm, warm climate or the person is immunocompromised with diseases or medication. Ringworm is characterized by ring shape, red scaly patches with clearing centers. The main types of ringworm are athlete's foot, jock itch, scalp ringworm, nail ringworm and body ringworm. Ringworm is diagnosed on the basis of medical history and physical examination. However the pattern and the appearance of ringworm are unique and hence can be diagnosed by just the physical appearance. The treatment of ringworm includes oral anti-fungal medications, special shampoo to eliminate the fungus and other steroids or medications. The medication is generally for four to eight weeks but some people need a longer treatment. The recurrence of ringworm is very likely as it can live indefinitely on the human skin. When it reoccurs the treatment may be repeated. Ringworm sometimes may be dangerous hence once it is identified a doctor should be consulted immediately.
