Salicylic acid for skin care and salicylic acid side effects

Half of the skin on my nose has turned black due to the application of salycylic acid - the other half is normal. Can you suggest how to turn the pigmented skin to original color?

It is unlikely that the pigmentation that you have experienced is permanent. Your skin will gradually return to its normal color, although this will certainly take a long time. Salicylic acid is used to treat several skin problems, but most commonly to treat acne. For the most part, salicylic acid is quite safe to use for skin care without medical supervision, but it should be used with caution as it is after all an acid. It should of course never be consumed orally or allowed to get into the eyes or nose, but in addition, you should make sure that you do not abuse it by using it in large quantities or too often. Salicylic acid should also not be used continuously for skin care over long periods of time. Using salicylic acid in any of these ways is very likely to irritate the skin, causing other problems or salicylic acid related side effects. More serious problems can also sometimes arise, such as headaches and dizziness.

In any case, the salicylic acid side effect that you have experienced is fortunately a rather mild one. The black staining of the skin typically occurs when salicylic acid and mercury (or medications containing these substances) are used on the same area of skin. People sometimes make the mistake of using several treatments at the same time, not realizing that there may be side effects. A chemical reaction occurs when these two substances (salicylic acid and mercury) are combined, causing irritation and black staining. Usually, the reaction is rather mild - it is nothing to worry about and does not require treatment, especially since you have not mentioned any irritation, which is quite fortunate. However, you will simply need to deal with the black stain for a few weeks till the stained skin has completely been replaced by new skin. As old skin dies and falls off and new skin grows, the stain will gradually fade.

In the meanwhile, you need to discontinue using salicylic acid on your nose, or in fact on any part of your face. Avoid using any other topical medication or cosmetics on this area as well. It is also advisable to minimize exposure to sunlight over the next few weeks. There are natural toners and exfoliators that are useful in getting rid of old skin and helping new skin grow, but since your skin already seems irritated, you should avoid using even these remedies. A safe solution is to apply aloe gel daily; apart from this, you will simply need to be patient.
