Pimples are a common problem faced by teenagers and young adults. Pimples are formed when the pores in our skin are blocked. Our skin has sebaceous glands which secrete a substance called sebum, whose purpose is to lubricate the skin and hair. When these pores are blocked by dead exfoliating skin cells or foreign particles, the sebum is trapped and cannot flow; the sebum then builds up over a period of time eventually causing swelling and sometimes infection. The sebum is known to contain bacteria like propionibacterium acnes, which are responsible for a disorder called acne vulgaris, of which pimples are a mere symptom.
Pimples can spread very rapidly if not controlled. Pressing and picking pimples with finger-nails may seem tempting, but this only serves to aggravate the situation. Although it may seem very complicated, acne can be prevented by adopting some very simple measures. To begin with, cleanliness and hygiene are very important factors in preventing and controlling the spread of pimples. Regular (3-4 times a day) but not excessive washing of the affected parts with a non-scented soap known as an acne cleanser is very effective. This helps open up clogged pores and doesn't allow the accumulation of excessive oil on one's face, which tends to attract dirt and bacteria.
A host of medical skin ointments for the treatment of pimples are available in the market. The essential ingredient is either benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid, both of which help open up pores by facilitating the removal of dead skin cells from the surface. This also helps in getting rid of acne causing bacteria.
Various home remedies have also provided good results in the past. You can try applying toothpaste over the pimples and then washing it off, after leaving it for an hour or two. Turmeric paste masks are also very effective. A weekly steam bath also helps greatly in controlling pimples. While many face washes and cleansers may be available in the market, one must choose a face wash according to one's skin type. It is advisable to rely on organic and natural products than synthetic and chemical face washes. A substantial number of people are allergic to certain chemicals commonly used in many face wash products. For any face wash to work, one must use it frequently and at regular time intervals. In case the face wash doesn't show results, you may opt for another non chemical face wash. Whatever remedy you choose to follow, you should be consistent, as consistency is essential for good results. If the situation is acute and the remedies don't work or cause irritation, you must visit a doctor at the earliest.
