From the description it sounds as if you are suffering from Melasma. Melasma are dark patches of irregular size which usually occur on the upper cheek, nose, upper lip and forehead. Melasma is caused by exposure to the sun and these patches develop gradually over a period of time. Women who have a light brown skin and live in countries where the sun is very strong are usually susceptible to this skin condition. Heredity is also often responsible of the occurrence of these dark brown patches on the skin. Some women find that when they are taking birth control pills they are likely to get these patches. Birth control pills can make your skin sensitive to sunlight and therefore cause the appearance of these dark brown patches on your skin. People with thyroid disease are more likely to suffer form melasma. Usually people suffering from melasma notice that these patches disappear by themselves over a period of time. You should consult a doctor about possible treatment for this problem.
The dark brown spots could also be another skin condition known as solar lentigines. This is a common problem for those with fair skin. This can also affect people who tan easily. However, you should observe these dark patches carefully and ascertain that you don't have melanoma. If the patches on your skin are made of more than one color of if they have irregular borders, you should definitely consult your doctor at the earliest. If the patches on your cheeks have a scale like feel to them, these may be solar keratoses or even seborrhoeic keratoses. In any case you should consult your doctor and first ascertain what these brown patches are. If you have Melanoma you will notice that the brown patches on your skin will change after a short period of time. These will become thickened and appear raised from the skin. Very often melanoma patients notice that these patches become itchy. They may also be tender and bleed easily. If your doctor believes that you are suffering from melanoma you will be asked to undergo an operation where these raised brown patches will be surgically removed. These patches will then be tested. You will find that protecting your skin from the sun will definitely cause the brown patches to fade. You will have to use a good quality sunscreen throughout the entire year in order to see a change in the patches on your skin.
