Dry hair is a rather common problem, and in a surprising number of cases the problem is similar to yours, in that the scalp and the hair roots are fine, but the rest of the hair shaft is dry. This is quite a simple problem to solve, one that does not really require any treatment or even a home remedy in the real sense of the term. All that you need to do is comb your hair regularly - it's as simple as that. Combing your hair helps spread the oil that is naturally secreted all over your hair, and thus solves the problem.

Our skin, including the skin on our heads, contains sebaceous glands. These glands secrete an oily substance that keeps our skin soft and moist. On the scalp, these naturally secreted oils usually spread from the scalp to the hair, traveling from the root all the way to the tip of the shaft. This keeps your hair naturally oiled, soft, and glossy. In many cases however, this naturally secreted oil does not travel all the way to the tip of each hair shaft. This is usually the case with very curly hair, which makes it difficult for the oil to spread across the length of each hair. As a result, you have situations in which the scalp is oily, but the hair is coarse and dry. The simplest and most effective solution to this problem is to comb your hair regularly. You should do this at least twice a day, (and if you feel the need, a few more times too) with long, steady, but gentle strokes. If you have long hair, you should be particularly careful to ensure that each stroke goes right from your scalp to the tip of your hair. The oil that currently tends to stay on your scalp will thus be spread along the length of your hair.

Regular combing should give you noticeable results within a week. Combing will also stimulate your scalp to produce more oil. This is because of the combing motion itself, and also because your scalp will be less oily than before due to the oil being spread over your hair. As a result, it will be encouraged to produce more oil.

One point of caution however - never comb your hair when it is wet, or even damp. Wet or damp hair is extremely delicate and susceptible to breakage, and combing it at this time will leave you with a new problem.
