There is no single correct way to perform a facial. A facial is not a medical procedure, but a cosmetic treatment, and there are several different ways in which it can be done. A facial itself is usually made up of several different cosmetic treatments, such as a face mask, a massage, exfoliation, moisturizing, steaming, and so on. The beautician or whoever is performing the procedure usually formulates his or her own elements and procedure - for example, some may feel that steaming and exfoliation are not necessary, and will therefore leave them out unless the customer asks for them. The customer is of course another factor - to some extent, the beautician will tailor his or her own procedure according to each customer's needs and requirements.

There are also several different established types of facials, such as the classic European facial, the mini facial, the Alpha Hydroxy Acid facial (AHA facial), the anti aging facial, the paraffin facial, and a variety of aromatherapy facials. Each of these may vary substantially from the others. For example, the paraffin facial uses a special paraffin mask that helps ensure that the creams and other mixtures applied to the skin are absorbed better. This type of facial is thought to give the face a much brighter, youthful glow, and is therefore often used in bridal beauty packages. AHA facials are thought to be good for sensitive or damaged skin, and use fruit extracts.

The classic European facial is the most basic kind of facial, and is probably the most popular one. This usually begins with cleansing of the skin, followed by steaming. After this, there may be exfoliation and removal of blackheads, depending on the skin type and whether the customer wants these performed. This is usually followed by a thorough massage, and then a face mask. The facial usually ends with application of toners and creams. Usually, if exfoliation and extraction are not performed, the treatment is considered to be a mini facial.

As mentioned before, there are variations on this procedure. You have not mentioned exactly why you think your instructor is misguiding you. If you or a customer has had a bad experience with your instructor's procedure, then you should simply ask him or her about why this has happened. Sometimes the problem may simply be due to sensitive skin. If you feel that your instructor's methods are drastically different from the standard facial, you could tactfully ask him or her why this is so.
