PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome, sometimes known as PCOD or polycystic ovarian disorder) is unfortunately a rather common disorder that affects women of reproductive age. The severe hair fall that you mention is one of the common symptoms of this disorder, and can sometimes be bad enough to cause noticeable thinning of hair on the top of the head. On the other hand, the disorder simultaneously causes the growth of excessive amounts of body hair, especially on areas such as the upper lip and the legs.

As with any other such disorder, the symptoms of hair loss and hirsutism (excessive growth of body hair) associated with PCOS cannot really be treated directly. At the most, you may be able to marginally reduce the amount of hair you are losing. The main course of action is to treat the disorder itself. Hopefully you are already doing this. Hair loss, although it can be quite traumatic, is only a mild cosmetic manifestation of PCOS. The disorder can also cause infertility, and in addition, greatly increases the risk of obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and even endometrial cancer. It is therefore extremely important to get proper medical treatment for PCOS, especially since treatment is usually quite effective.

In addition to medical treatment, dietary measures are also usually recommended. This is primarily in order to lose weight, as obesity is associated with PCOS. The recommended diet is usually one that cuts down on carbohydrates, especially simple carbohydrates such as white bread, pastries, cookies and so on, while simultaneously incorporating a daily exercise regimen. Exercising and eating healthy will have the added benefit of making your hair grow better and look better.

Apart from this, we can only recommend standard hair care practices for weak or damaged hair. Wash your hair regularly, using a mild shampoo that is suitable for your hair type. You should also oil your hair at least twice a week, leaving the oil on overnight and washing it off in the morning. After washing your hair, you could try using a conditioner, especially if your hair tends to be exposed to a lot of wind, sun, and pollution. If you are also experiencing excessive hair growth, you can either use standard hair removal techniques to get rid of the hair, or you can use medications that will stop or limit unwanted hair growth. These tend to have side effects however, so you should consult your doctor before using them.
