Curly hair is the type of hair that is most affected by dryness. This is due to the very structure of the hair, which makes it difficult for the natural oils to spread through the hair. Normally, hair is kept oily because of the oily substance known as sebum that is naturally produced by glands under the skin. This sebum spreads from the scalp to the roots of the hair, and then over the entire strand of hair, all the way to the tip. Unfortunately, with curly hair, this very often does not happen - sebum does not spread all the way to the tips of the hair, result in the seemingly odd problem of an oily scalp and dry hair. If this is the case with you, you should simply start combing your hair more often. Comb gently but thoroughly, with long strokes to ensure that the sebum is spread properly. Combing your hair not only spreads sebum over the strands of hair, it also stimulates the scalp to produce more sebum. Therefore, even if the dryness is due to insufficient production of sebum, combing will still help.

Within a few days you will probably notice that you hair is less dry than it used to be. However, in case this does not happen, you will need to take some additional measures. You should start oiling your hair twice a week, and if necessary more frequently too. Oil should preferably be applied at least one hour before washing your hair or if possible overnight. Massage the oil into your scalp gently with a circular motion of your fingertips. This too stimulates the sebaceous glands in the scalp, besides obviously providing additional oil. You might also need to change your shampoo - even if you are already using a shampoo for dry hair, it might be that the specific brand you are using does not suit your hair. In any case, since you have a dandruff problem, you should switch to an anti dandruff shampoo. Ensure that the shampoo you use contains salicylic acid, zinc pyrithione, ketoconazole, or selenium sulfide. If you prefer, you can use tea tree oil, which is also an antifungal agent, but this is not always effective.

Avoid exposing your hair to too much wind and sun, as these tend to dry your hair and will therefore worsen the problem. If you continue to have a problem with dry hair and dandruff, you should consult your doctor.
