Avoiding shaving legs in hot weather

I get itchy skin in hot weather and when I shave my legs they not only get itchy - razor burns like - but water from shower head causes to itch more. When I get out of the shower I am still itching, what can I do?

Itching of the skin after having shaved is quite a common phenomenon, and there is probably nothing wrong with you. It seems that you face this problem only when the weather is hot. In such weather you are of course going to sweat more, and as a result, your legs are quite likely to itch and burn after they have been shaved. When you shave, it is inevitable that your skin gets scraped - even with a new razor and a careful shave, tiny nicks and scrapes are bound to occur, and the sweat will therefore cause your skin to sting and itch.

It is also possible that your razor or the shaving cream, or some other product that you use when you shave is responsible for your problem. One of these products could be irritating your skin, and thus causing the burning and itching. Instead of changing your hair removal technique, you could simply use different products to shave. Try using a different razor, and more importantly, use a different shaving cream. If you use any other products for shaving, try replacing them too. It might also help to apply aloe gel on your legs immediately after shaving, as this will have a soothing effect.

However, the best course of action would probably be to avoid shaving your legs in hot weather altogether. You can instead try different methods of removing your hair, such as waxing. If you find waxing too painful, or if it causes problems of its own, you can use a mechanical epilator instead. This has a similar effect - it pulls out the hairs right from the root - but it is usually a lot less painful. There are other methods available too, if you are not happy with these. Depilatory powders and creams are available - these, like shaving, remove the portion of hair that is above the surface of the skin. The cream or powder dissolves the hair that it comes into contact with, and is then simply wiped or washed away. These are of course chemicals however, and if you have sensitive skin, they might cause irritation. Therefore, before you use such a cream or powder, you should test it on a small area of skin. If you continue to experience the itching and burning sensations no matter what hair removal method you use, then you should visit a doctor, as you may have some kind of skin condition.
