Dry and rough hair is usually the result of inadequate hair care. First of all, if you have curly hair, then it has a natural tendency to be dry and rough. Because of the very nature and structure of curly hair, sebum produced by the scalp does not spread across the hair very well, leaving it dry and rough. In some cases, this may also happen with straight hair, although this is not very common. The best way to counter this is to comb your hair several times a day, to help the sebum to spread properly and coat your hair. This is the first thing you need to do, especially if you have oily hair. Combing also stimulates the scalp to produce more sebum, so even if part of the problem is with sebum production, combing will certainly help.

If in spite of regular combing, your hair remains dry and rough, then the main problem is that your scalp is producing very little sebum for some reason. Gently massaging your scalp with your finger tips is another way to stimulate sebum production. This can be done when applying oil - the oil will substitute the natural sebum and provide other benefits too, while the massaging action will prompt the sebaceous glands in your scalp to function better. Coconut oil is the best oil for hair, particularly if your hair is rough and damaged. It penetrates better than most other oils, and also provides more protection against protein loss and damage. Ideally, you should apply the oil at night, just before you go to bed. In the morning, wash off the oil using a suitable shampoo, and then condition your hair. Make sure that the shampoo is on your head for at least a minute after lathering, and that the conditioner is on your head for at least three minutes. After a final rinse, soak up the excess water with a towel, and then let your hair dry naturally. Do not rub it dry or use a hair dryer, as these methods will damage your hair and make it still rougher.

You can also try applying coconut milk and egg yolk to your hair and scalp once a week. This is a simple home remedy that will make your hair smooth and shiny. Note that your hair will not suddenly become soft and shiny overnight; it will take at least a week for any improvement to show, and up to a month for these measures to really work.
