Dark circles under the eyes are often thought to be the result of fatigue and tiredness, usually due to a simple lack of sleep. If you have lost a lot of sleep in the last few months, then the best thing for you to do is to catch up on sleep. Even if this is a more long standing problem, it is possible that lack of sleep is the cause. People your age often work excessively long hours to the detriment of their health. The dark circles may be a simple and fortunately rather harmless sign that you are not sleeping enough.
On the other hand, today doctors are of the opinion that dark circles are usually the result of allergic reactions. The skin on the face, and particularly under and around the eyes, is extremely thin, and therefore blood vessels are quite easily visible through it. When you have an allergic reaction, you probably experience nasal congestion, and as a result, the blood vessels in your face dilate. With more blood flowing through them, the blood vessels around your eyes are much darker and more prominent than usual. The darkened appearance of the skin under your eyes is really because of the blood that can be seen through your skin - it is not your skin itself that has darkened. The only possible change that might have occurred in your skin is that it has gotten a little thinner and more delicate through the years, and is therefore more likely to be affected by such problems.
If you already know that you have certain allergies, then you should try a little harder to stay away from the substances that you are allergic to. If on the other hand you are not sure if and what you are allergic to, you should visit a specialist and get a few tests done. Allergy tests are extremely reliable today, and will help you identify the substances that are irritating you. Common causes of allergy related nasal congestion are pollen and dust, so you should keep away from these things in particular.
There are some common home remedies for dark circles, but these are only temporarily effective. If you want a quick and temporary cure you can simply place slices of cucumber over your eyelids while you lie down for fifteen minutes. This causes the blood vessels to constrict, thus making them less visible. However, the effect barely lasts for an hour.
