Information on Nails

Nails are essentially made of keratin, which is a hard protein that is also present in skin and hair. The only biological material that is tougher than keratin is chitin, which is a carbohydrate that is the main component of a crab's shell, among other things. As you can see, your nails are in pretty tough company.

Although a nail is produced by living skin cells in the finger or toe, the cells that make up the nail itself are themselves not living cells, just like hair. Similarly, they also have no nerves, which is why you can cut nails and hair without experiencing any pain. However, they are, again like hair, attached to the living cells from where they grow, which is why pulling them out, or any other damage that affects this part of the nail or the finger or toe can be quite painful.

Also, the fact that nail cells are not living does not mean that they do not need to be taken care of. While you may not need to care for your nails as much as you do for your skin and hair, they are susceptible to certain problems and disease that basically stem from a lack of hygiene and either an excess or lack of moisture.
