Darkening of the underarms is not always due to hyperpigmentation. There are a number of possible causes for this phenomenon, and since it is rarely possible to identify the cause with any amount of certainty in every case, it is usually a good idea to address all the possible causes.

As far as hyperpigmentation goes, it could in turn be due to excessive friction. If you wear tight clothing that constantly pulls and scrapes at the dark underarm area, then the skin in this area is quite likely to darken. The obvious solution is to wear clothes that fit you a little more loosely. Your clothes need not necessarily be actually loose, but they should at least fit comfortably. Simply ensure that they are not tight and do not rub against your skin constantly, especially at the armpits. If you are overweight, this will add to the problem, as there is quite likely to be non stop friction, whether or not your clothes are tight. If this is the case, then this is another reason for you to lose weight, besides all the health reasons.

Constant dampness and the subsequent growth of bacteria also seem to be factors in the darkening of underarm skin. You should therefore be very particular about underarm hygiene. Wear cool, loose clothes that do not accumulate sweat, and change them regularly. Change your clothes in the middle of the day if you feel the need, and avoid wearing synthetic materials that increase sweating. for whitening underarm, you should also wash your underarms thoroughly, scrubbing them with a loofah or a pumice stone. However, avoid using anti perspirants as they can be harmful for the skin, besides which it is thought that the chemicals they contain can add to or even cause darkening of the underarm skin. Deodorants are safe, but it is still a good idea to avoid using them excessively. One safe alternative is scrubbing your underarms with a cut lemon. This is usually said to have a bleaching effect, but it is doubtful that it will noticeably lighten your underarms. However, it will help get rid of the bacteria and leave your underarms smelling fresh and pleasant.

Finally, darkening of the underarms is often a side effect of shaving. As you know, shaving only cuts off the part of hair that is above the skin, leaving a portion of the shaft under the skin. It is thought that this hair that is left behind causes the skin to appear dark. You can therefore try waxing your underarms instead, and see if this makes a difference.
