Skin burns and sun tans info

I have been exposed to the sun at a swimming pool during the summer (5 sessions every time 25 min laying in the sun) and have a tan skin now. How long does it take to remove the tan? How do you know if it is pigmentation?

You cannot simply "remove" a tan. Due to the exposure to sunlight, your skin has become dark, and it will stay that way for a while. You will simply have to wait while your skin gradually returns to its normal color. As for skin pigmentation, a tan is in fact an increase in pigmentation in the skin - this is natural, and there is nothing for you to worry about. Pigmentation is nothing harmful - your skin gets its color from natural pigmentation. This means that it gets is color from the presence of a substance known as melanin, which is a pigment that is naturally produced by special skin cells known as melanocytes.

If you were actually referring to a sunburn rather than pigmentation of skin, they you probably still do not need to worry. If you were sunburnt you would quite certainly know by now. Your skin would be red and it would itch and burn constantly. After a few days it would start to peel, and if the sun burn was very bad, blisters would also appear. If these symptoms have not yet made an appearance, then you do not have a sunburn, only a sun tan.

Too much sunlight can damage your skin, and melanin provides some amount of protection from this damage. Therefore, when your skin is exposed to sunlight for long periods of time, such as your 25 minute sessions, your skin needs more melanin and the melanocytes increase production of the pigment. With more of the melanin pigment, your skin color will obviously become darker. Also, in addition to prompting the production of additional melanin, sunlight darkens the melanin that is already present in your skin. This is all that a tan is, so there is no need for you to worry about it or try to get rid of suntan. It is the natural result of spending time in the sun, and would be considered by most people to be worth the fun of lying by the pool.

As time goes by, the melanin in your skin will be discarded and new melanin will be produced. Since you are unlikely to spend such long periods of time in the sun on a regular basis, your skin will not need so much melanin, and will therefore produce it in smaller quantities. As a result, your skin color will slowly return to normal.

Avoid trying to bleach your skin, whether with commercial products or home remedies, as this will mostly be a waste of time and might also end up damaging your skin.
