It is important to shield your skin from the harmful effects of the sun's UV rays to protect your skin from tanning and also to prevent skin cancer. You should always wear a wide-brimmed hat to protect your face from the sun's rays, especially when you step out in the afternoon and wear loose, cotton clothes with long-sleeves to protect your arms. However this is not sufficient and it is essential to apply a good sunscreen lotion with an adequate SPF to protect your skin from the sun's rays. Sunscreen lotions can be very expensive but they are unavoidable since they help the skin and help to reduce expenses on skin treatments in the long run. It is thus, extremely important to choose your sunscreen lotion properly depending on the type of skin you have and your exposure to the sun.

If you have oily skin, you should look for a sunscreen lotion which is water-based or gel-based. You should avoid sun-screen lotions that are oil-based. It is best to choose a sunscreen lotion that does not have fragrant additives but moisturizes the skin in addition to providing sun protection. If you are prone to excessive sweating or you will be swimming it is advisable to use a gel-based sunscreen lotion since it does not get easily washed off. Depending your exposure to the sun and the type of skin you have you should choose an adequate SPF. An SPF of 15 or 20 is essential if you have normal skin and not much exposure to the sun. However if you are going to spend a lot of time under the sun or if you have pale, fair skin that is prone to sun-burns you should consider getting a sunscreen lotion with an SPF factor of at least 45. Sunscreen lotions with Aloe Vera extract are beneficial for the skin since they protect the skin from the sun's UV-A and UV-B rays in addition to moisturizing the skin. If the sunscreen lotion has cucumber and watermelon extracts it is an added advantage since that will help to cool the skin. You should remember to apply an adequate amount of sunscreen lotion on all exposed parts of your body at least 10 minutes before you leave the house. However it is equally important to remove the sunscreen lotion at nigh before you go to bed so that it does not clog your pores and lead to other skin problems.
