This is a common problem with most people who spend a lot of time in the sun. Tanning is a natural effect of exposure to sunlight, and there is nothing wrong with it, but the drastic difference in color between skin that is regularly exposed and skin that is almost never exposed results in a rather odd appearance. Unfortunately, the only thing for you to do is protect your neck from exposure to sunlight. There is no way to get rid of a tan, but if from now on you minimize exposure to sunlight, your skin will gradually return to its natural color within a few months.

Skin color depends upon the amount of melanin in the skin, and while this is primarily determined by your genes, it is affected by exposure to sunlight. Melanin blocks harmful the UV rays in sunlight, and when your skin needs more protection it produces more melanin. Since your neck is regularly exposed to sunlight, the skin in this area has produced more melanin to protect itself. Darkening of the skin is also partly due to the oxidization and thus the darkening of melanin that is already present in the skin, but this tan does not last very long. Your tan is mainly due to the constant production of large quantities of melanin due to constant exposure to sunlight. Once exposure is stopped or even reduced, your skin will reduce production of melanin, and will gradually get rid of the excess melanin that is present.

To have an even skin tone once again, you therefore need to avoid exposing your neck to sunlight at all times. Applying sunscreen lotion to your neck before going outdoors may help a bit, but actually covering your skin is always much more effective. You should avoid wearing t-shirts and other shirts that do not have collars - if you can, wear collars that are a bit high, so that they cover more of your neck. You should also wear a hat if possible, as this will provide additional protection from sunlight.

In addition, whenever it is possible to entirely avoid being out in the sun, you should do so. If you absolutely must be outdoors during the day, you should try to ensure that you are not in sunlight for more than a couple of minutes at a time. Finally, regularly scrubbing your neck with a mixture of honey, lemon, turmeric powder and sandalwood powder will marginally lighten your skin.
