A blackhead is medically known as an open comedo, and is very similar to a pimple. In fact it is one of the basic signs of an acne problem. With a blackhead or open comedo, a hair follicle gets blocked by dead skin cells, sebum (the natural oil that is produced by your skin), and bacteria. Over time, these substances are oxidized and become black in color, thus leading to the name and the typical appearance of a blackhead. There are also closed comedos, which are commonly known as whiteheads; since these are closed, the oxidization does not occur, and hence the corresponding name and color.

In some cases, a blackhead may result in the development of a pimple, while in other cases it may remain as it is, and eventually disappear. Whether or not your blackheads turn to pimples, they do of course look rather unpleasant. Fortunately, it is usually possible to prevent blackheads from developing, or at least reducing the frequency and number, and there are also a few home remedies that can help get rid of blackheads that do develop anyway.

First of all, it is very important that you keep your skin absolutely clean. This does not have much to do with dirt - contrary to the common misconception that blackheads are caused by dirt - but regular cleansing helps get rid of dead skin cells and excess sebum, and also minimizes the number of bacteria present on the skin. As a result, the chances of blackheads developing are greatly reduced. You can use any commercially available face mask and cleanser to clean your skin, or you can use some simple remedies that you prepare yourself. One easy and effective remedy involves mixing honey, lemon juice, sandalwood powder, and turmeric powder into a thin paste, and then scrubbing your face gently with this paste. After this, you should rinse your face with plain water, then steam your face, and then wipe it dry. If necessary, you can apply a moisturizing lotion after a few minutes.

This treatment also helps get rid of blackheads that have already developed. Similarly, yogurt also helps get rid of blackheads. You can mix in a little oatmeal with the yogurt, add some lemon juice as well, and use this mixture to scrub your face. Never try to remove a blackhead by force or with harsh chemicals, as this will damage your skin. If you are in a hurry, get a professional to treat your blackheads.
