It is not possible to become fair simply by eating any particular foods. Neither is it possible to lighten your complexion by applying anything on your skin, as it commonly assumed by many people. The color of your skin is not affected by the food you eat or by any creams or even home remedies that you apply topically to your skin. At the most, these factors can help you to have clear, glowing skin, which is much better than simply having fair skin that may or may not be healthy.

The color of your skin depends on the amount of melanin that your skin contains, which in turn depends on your genes. All of us have specialized skin cells known as melanocytes, whose job it is to produce the protective pigment melanin; our genes determine how much melanin these melanocytes produce. Obviously, there is no way to change your genes - you can therefore not reduce the amount of melanin that your skin produces. The only thing you can do is ensure that your skin does not produce more melanin than is natural for it. To do this, you must reduce the amount of exposure to sunlight. Exposure to sunlight prompts your skin to produce more melanin and thus become darker, and this is what is known as a tan. This is not really a bad thing - in fact, more melanin provides more protection for your skin against sunlight. However, if you want to avoid this, you should simply avoid exposing yourself to sunlight too often. Complete avoidance of sunlight is of course harmful and hardly even practical, but it is possible to minimize exposure. This can be done by avoiding going outdoors during peak sunlight hours, wearing clothing that covers as much skin as possible, and in addition applying sunscreen before going out into the sun. If you take these precautions, your skin will reduce melanin production to the levels that are normal as per your genes, and your skin will thus return to its normal color. Of course, you cannot expect this to happen overnight or even within a week or two. It will take several months for your tan to fade noticeably, and a severe tan may take a year or more.

In the meanwhile, eating a healthy diet, drinking plenty of water, protecting your skin from pollution and dryness, and implementing a good skin care regimen can improve your complexion, and make your skin look beautiful, no matter how dark or fair you are.
