The easiest and best way of returning to dark hair again is to let your hair grow out. This would also be the slowest way of going about it, however. You would have to wait till your roots are back to the normal dark color of hair you have in order to accomplish this effectively. If you have that kind of time and leeway, then this option is better than any other that might be able to accomplish this. However, if you do not, then you must follow the simplest rule of hair coloring. This is to keep in mind that if your hair is naturally dark, and you have added some sort of color to it, then you need to get rid of the color first. Once your hair is back to its natural color, you should leave it in an un-dyed state for a few days. It is preferable to leave the hair without color for about a week or so. After this, you should apply fresh color to your hair. This way, the color will stick fast and remain true. Otherwise, the commonest problem with coloring dark hair is that it tends to mix with the dye and turn into another unrecognizable color altogether. If you do not want this to happen, you should make it a point to wait out that week. While it may present some amount of cosmetic problems, it will be well worth it.

Since you want to return to the natural color of your hair, you should go out and buy hair color which is naturally the closest shade to your natural coloring. Use this to dye your hair. Basically, you should keep your hair colored for about a month or so in order to ensure that most of the copper and bleached highlights return. After this, your roots will gradually start showing through the hair color. If you cannot distinguish between the roots that are not colored and strands that are colored, you should know that the new hair growing out has the natural dark color of your hair. Then you can leave your hair alone till the roots and strands grow out. Since you have been dyeing your hair consistently, you should also try to make it a point to get a hair cut every 6 to 8 weeks. This way, you will also be clipping off the hair that has faced the worse of the hair coloring process.
