Hyper pigmentation refers to the medical condition in which parts of the skin become darker than the surrounding areas. This happens due to excessive production of melanin, the skin pigment by the skin cells known as melanocytes. Hyper pigmentation affects people of all races and is a cause of social discomfort and embarrassment. The condition is usually caused by excessive exposure to the harmful ultra-violet rays of the sun. When the internal system of our body is not functioning well, during diseases, pregnancy or old age, the melanocytes are not in control and begin producing excessive melanin. The body parts affected are those which are exposed more to the sun, i.e. the face, neck, arms and legs.

There are currently several treatments available for hyper pigmentation which include medications which artificially provide supplements of retinoids, Vitamin C and E which are beneficial for the skin, chemical treatments which involve peeling of the affected areas of the skin and abrasion techniques which also get rid of the upper layer of the skin. However all these techniques are expensive and not devoid of side effects. You can instead use simple home remedies which gradually reverse the effects of hyper pigmentation and prevent it for spreading further. Cocoa butter, widely recommended for many skin conditions, can be applied daily on the skin to improve the skin's elasticity and improve the skin tone and texture. Aloe Vera is also recognized as an excellent natural treatment for all skin problems. You can either directly apply the fresh juice of the Aloe Vera plant on the affected areas, or consume the juice orally on a regular basis. You can apply several face-packs that help to reverse the effects of tanning and hyper pigmentation. A traditional face-pack that is highly recommended can be made by drying orange peels and grinding them to a powder and mixing this with some raw milk or cream. This face pack should be applied daily on the face, neck and arms for 15 to 20 minutes before washing it off. Wiping the face with a cotton ball soaked in cucumber juice of potato juice is also beneficial for lightening the skin color. Apart from this, you should take care to cover your skin with a good sunscreen lotion with a SPF of 15 to 30, depending on how fair your skin is and the amount of exposure to the sun. You can also take additional precautions such as wearing a wide-brimmed hat to protect your face, wearing loose, long-sleeved cotton clothes that cover your arms and legs and avoiding the sun between 11am and 4 pm. Finally it is crucial to maintain a healthy, balanced diet rich in Vitamins and drink plenty of water to keep your skin naturally hydrated and healthy.
