Hair loss due to Hyperthryroidism

I am suffering from lots of hair loss. I have an overactive thyroid. I am vegetarian so my protein intake is not good. Which kind of food I should eat, which kind of shampoo I should use? My hair type is normal.

Since you have an overactive thyroid gland, the reason for your hair loss is already clear. Hyperthryroidism is known to cause hair loss, and this kind of hair loss can only be corrected by getting the thyroid gland, or at least the levels of the thyroid hormone, under control. Diet and hair care do have an effect on hair growth, but in this case your diet and your hair care practices are not the problem. The problem is the excessive production of the thyroid hormone in your body, and even if your diet is perfect and you give your hair all the care possible, you will continue to lose hair till the thyroid problem is solved.

The good thing about this kind of hair loss is that it is always temporary, and once your thyroid problem is successfully treated, the hair fall will reduce, and your hair will grow normally once again. This may take time of course - hair falls very rapidly, and hair growth, unfortunately, takes a long time. It may therefore take up to a year for your hair to return to normal, and this is from the time the thyroid condition is fully resolved.

In the meanwhile, you can ensure that your diet and lifestyle do not contribute to the problem. There is no specific diet for hair growth, as almost all the vitamins, and several minerals, are necessary for proper hair growth. This means that you need to eat a varied and balanced diet, or you are likely to end up with a deficiency of some vitamin or the other. Since you are a vegetarian, you need to be particularly diligent about your protein intake. You can get your daily requirement of protein from dairy products such as milk, yogurt, and cheese, as well as from nuts and legumes such as peas and beans. Some vegetarians eat eggs, and if you do too, you can get a good amount of protein from them. If your sources of protein are primarily plant based - nuts and legumes - then you need to have a lot of variety. Plant sources are usually not complete protein sources - they do not contain all the essential amino acids. It is therefore necessary to have a lot of variety, to ensure that you get all the essential amino acids from your diet.

There is no specific shampoo that you need to use. Since your hair is normal, you have no special requirements. Just ensure that the shampoo that you use suits your hair - remember that what works for one person may not work for the other.
