Dandruff is a skin condition of the scalp which is marked by itching and flaking of dead skin. While a little bit of flaking is common occurrence in healthy scalp, chronic condition of dandruff is marked by excessive shedding of dead cells accompanied with severe itching. Although dandruff, in general, is not a serious condition, it often can lead to much embarrassment and social awkwardness. In extreme cases, it may also give rise to low self esteem in the suffering person. Most often, proper care and hygiene is enough to check dandruff. However, in severe cases, medication should be administered in consultation with a dermatologist. There can be several causes for getting dandruff. The most common reason is the presence of fungus malassezia that lives on human scalp. Normally, simply the presence of malassezia does not lead to chronic dandruff; however, unchecked growth of this fungus makes it a chronic condition. Dandruff can also happen if proper hair care is not practiced. Skin disorders like eczema and psoriasis can also cause dandruff. Sometimes, improper choice of hair care products may also induce dandruff. It is considered that stress, illness, poor diet, and hormonal imbalance are linked to dandruff as well.
Here are a few natural remedies you can try to check dandruff. It is important to shampoo your hair regularly to get rid of dandruff. You can use tea tree oil as a shampoo. Also, you can prepare your own shampoo by mixing apple cider vinegar with water. Apply this mixture and massage gently on your scalp, wrap your head with a towel for some time, and then wash off your head with water. A mixture of coconut oil and lemon juice can also be applied similarly. Fenugreek seeds are another good remedy for treating dandruff. Soak two spoonfuls of fenugreek seeds in water overnight and make a paste of it by grinding. Apply this paste on your scalp, leave it for about an hour, and then rinse your scalp with water. Also, avoid using blow dryer; instead, dry your hair by gently massaging with a towel. This way, blood circulation in the scalp increases. For the same reason, comb your hair more frequently. Diet also plays an important part in dealing with dandruff. Eat plenty of green vegetables and fresh fruits (especially citrus fruits). Avoid processed foods, caffeinated drinks, alcohol, oily and spicy foods. Plus, drink plenty of water to keep yourself well hydrated.
