Herpes zoster infection, often simply known as zoster, or more commonly as shingles, can be quite a painful condition. It is basically a viral infection (caused by the varicella zoster virus) that manifests itself in the form of a rash and blisters. The rash and/or blisters usually appear in the form of a stripe, on one side of the body, typically on the torso. This rash, although is the most obvious and identifiable sign of herpes zoster, is only a later symptom. Early symptoms include headaches and a fever, which are later accompanied by itching and burning pain, and an extreme sensitivity to touch and temperature. These symptoms are not very easy to diagnose, and it is therefore usually the case that a diagnosis is made only when the rash appears. Some types of herpes zoster infections can also be more serious, involving loss of vision, hearing, and balance.

A bout of shingles and herpes zoster usually takes its own course and disappears after three or four weeks, but it is usually a good idea to get yourself treated. Treatment for herpes zoster is usually able to reduce the severity of the pain as well as shorten the duration of the disease. Another important reason why you should get medical treatment is to avoid the risk of any complications and long lasting effects; in addition to the complications mentioned above, some cases of herpes zoster also result in severe pain that lasts for years after the attack.

Herpes zoster treatment primarily consists of antiviral drugs to fight the viral infection. In addition, doctors also often use corticosteroids to reduce inflammation, along with painkillers, particularly if the pain is very severe. If you are not happy about taking painkillers you can tell your doctor so, but the antiviral and anti-inflammatory drugs are very important.

There are no home remedies to treat herpes zoster, especially if you are hoping for some kind of substitute for medical treatment. However, there are certain measures that you can take to reduce your discomfort and speed up the healing process. Probably the most important thing you need to do is avoid stress and get plenty of rest. Herpes is basically the result of a weak immune system, and is thought to be triggered by excessive stress, among other factors. Bathing with cool water several times a day also helps soothe the itching and burning sensation. You can also apply a cold compress several times a day.
