If you have a black eye caused due to a blow or another kind of injury, the most precious gift you can give to the eye is to sleep. Rest is the best way of healing the black eye. If less than a day has elapsed after the injury, then you can begin treating the black eye by applying warm compresses to it. It is commonly believed that cold ice packs will reduce the swelling and will have good results. But you should know that this is a better remedy to use after a while. Initially, if you apply warm compresses, it will sting, but the blood will disperse and not clot. It is this clotting which causes the discoloration of the eye in the first place. After you have tried warm compresses, you can work on bringing down the swelling. Papaya and pineapple are two fruits that are very rich in anti oxidants and will help to heal almost any kind of injury that has led to discoloration of the skin. They can be applied topically around the blackened area of the eye. They can also be eaten for good effect. But be careful not to get them into your eye while applying, as this may sting and cause the eye to swell up further. Painkillers should not be consumed as they usually lull your body into a false belief that things are better while actually they are not. When this happens, you will end up using the injured part of your body more. As a result, you will slow down the healing process, rather than accelerate it.

Some simple things can also be used out of the kitchen for this purpose. Grate a potato and squeeze out the juice, which can be applied to the eye for good results. You can also use a cucumber instead of a potato. Castor oil can be massaged into the area around the blackened eye. This will help to bring down the swelling to a large extent. You can also use arnica oil instead of castor oil. Witch hazel is also a particularly good healing agent to be used for injuries of any and all kinds. You can soak a cotton pad in it and place it on the injured eye for gentle soothing as well as healing effects. You can also use chilled and used tea bags, or cucumber slices, for the same effect for excellent results.
