Fever blisters or cold sores may cause eruptions to appear often around the lips, but these generally occur in clusters. Fever blisters are caused as a result of the herpes simplex virus. Lip fever blisters are most commonly mucocoeles or mucous retention cysts that are extremely common because unlike the rest of your body the lips are lined with mucous cells not skin cells. Mucocoeles are not a serious condition and you need not worry about it. There is no general lip fever blister treatment as they heal on their own and do not require any treatment unless the mucocele appears to be particularly persistent. Lip fever blisters are painless mucous cysts that occur most often on the inner surface of your lips but they can also form on the inside of your cheeks. These cysts contain mucin that is produced by salivary glands and they generally form when a salivary duct gland gets ruptured due to some injury or because of friction with your teeth or as a result of repeated sucking at the lip membrane. A mucocele may also form if there is any blockage of the openings on the inside of your mouth that secrete moisture. The cysts break eventually and the fluid escapes. The cyst then heals on its own.

There are however certain precautions that you can take to prevent the recurrence of mucocoeles.

  • Never try to burst your cyst.
  • Examine your teeth carefully and if you notice any sharp edges on your teeth that are adjacent to the area get your dentist to smooth them out. Until you do so your teeth will continue to cause ruptures to salivary glands and the appearance of mucocoeles.
  • Avoid biting your lips even when nervous or tense as this common behavioral response is also often responsible for the development of mucocoeles.
  • One useful home remedy for a lip blister that you can try is a mixture of milk and turmeric powder. Gently apply it with a swab of cotton over the cyst and leave the cotton in place until it feels dry.
  • You can also apply a little honey or castor oil to your lips for some quick relief. Castor oil is an effective emollient and will help significantly. Apply both at least twice a day.
  • Salt water treatment is the most effective home remedy and rinsing your mouth with a glass of salt water around three to four times a day can help a lot. This should solve your problem within two days itself.
