I have recently developed white spots on my well tanned back, shoulders and stomach, someone told me it is a yeast infection but I read different symptoms for a yeast infection - what could this be?

The development of such white spots could be indicative of a large number of things. While any symptoms of regular yeast infection you may have read about could very well be different, it is important for you to know that the sudden occurrence of white spots is also a sign of yeast infection. This is particularly true if they are on an area such as your back. However, this does not mean that the white spots you have developed necessarily indicate that you are suffering from a yeast infection. If you have had these spots on your skin for more than a month, it is advisable to get them checked out by a dermatologist, who will be able to diagnose your condition more accurately than a regular doctor. Otherwise, there are some simple precautionary measures you could take to try and eliminate them on your own. Sometimes, certain skin types develop an allergy to the sun's rays and direct exposure to them. This is one of the causes you can get these white spots all over the areas where you may have missed out applying a thick enough layer of sunscreen lotion. Although this is an extremely rare allergy, you cannot rule it out altogether. You have described yourself as well tanned. This would indicate that you spend a good amount of time in the sun. You would need to ensure if this is the cause of your problem.

Sometimes, white spots can also be a sign of leucoderma, or vitilgo. This is also colloquially known as the white patch disease. Once again, you would need to get your skin examined by a dermatologist to determine if you have this problem, if you do, it is important to know that it can be a hereditary problem a lot of times. If this is the case, you can hardly reverse the problem. All you can do is to try and control it. Since white patches are directly connected to a weak liver, you can start working on improving the general health of your liver. Consumption of alcohol in any form is absolutely forbidden while suffering from this problem. It is better to be in a vegan diet, as this will help you to maintain a healthier liver. Avoid heavy work to give your internal organs proper rest. Eating radish in any form is particularly useful in maintaining good health of the liver. These methods should help if you are indeed suffering from Vitiligo.
