Blackheads are caused when open pores on one's skin get clogged with oily deposits, dead skin cells, and other debris. People with oily skins are more prone to blackheads and it worsens with exposure to dirt and pollution. Lack of a proper skin cleansing regime can also cause more blackheads to appear. And it is not just the face where they turn up: your back, chest, arms, can all be affected. However a regular cleansing schedule can prevent fresh out breaks and there are tried and tested home cures for the ones that are already in place.

To take steam on your face the procedure is easy and can be done at home painlessly. Heat some water, do not let it boil but neither should it be just warm: ideally make it as hot as you can bear but not so hot that you get scalded. Pour it into a basin. You could add some fragrant herbs as well, though this is purely for pleasure and does not have any curative properties. Hold your face over it and cover your head and the basin with a large towel so that the steam cannot escape. Do this for about 5-7 minutes but make sure you lift your face away from the basin very often. After steaming your face you will find that the pores are open. Now wrap a tissue around your fingers and squeeze the blackheads gently so that the dirt which plugs the pore can come out. Be careful at this stage as if you squeeze too hard you will scar your face. Also make certain that you do not use your nails: not just can you scar your face but you will also expose yourself to the dangers of infection. Instead of squeezing out the blackheads you could rub your face gently with a warm, slightly damp washcloth which would also dislodge the blackheads. Once you have got the blackheads dislodged you should wash your face with cold water to close the pores. Don't steam your face more often than twice a week as it can loosen your skin. Other home remedies for blackheads include making a paste of almonds and rose water and applying on the face. Wash your face after 10 minutes or so.

To avoid blackheads from recurring make sure you follow a rigorous cleansing regime: cleanse your face daily, once a week steam your face and apply a face mask after the steaming.
