Bed sores are common among people suffering from various illnesses. Illness can keep a person confined to the bed for long periods of time. Lying on the bed in one position means that there is a continuous pressure on only some parts of the body. As a result the bed sores develop. You can treat bed sores, especially if they are in the initial stages. You should examine your mother's back, shoulders and try to ascertain where she has the bed sores. If these are detected and treated early they can be prevented from growing too large. You can identify bedsores by the color and texture of the skin. Usually the skin shows discoloration. There are patches of red or discolored skin. Sometimes the skin is moist and shows evidence of the formation of pus. On the areas of the skin over bones, the sores are visible as a tearing of the skin or as a lesion.

One of the first things you should do to reduce bed sores, is to change your mother's position periodically. In fact, it is advisable to rotate your mother's body on the bed. This will ensure that too much pressure does not fall on one spot of her body. You can use ripple mattress or else air pillows and mattresses to ensure that she is comfortable. Keep her body dry at all times since moisture can cause bed sores. You can also employ a well qualifies masseur to ensure that your mother's body gets sufficient exercise. This will keep her skin supple and less likely to develop sores.

A healthy diet is another important way to treat and reduce the bed sores. Your mother will have to be given a diet that is rich if Vitamin C and zinc to recover quickly. However, you will have to seek the advice of her doctor before determining her diet. A nutritionist will also be able to help you design a menu for your mother. Give her plenty of citrus fruits. Proteins are important too and your mother's diet should include plenty of those. Ensure that she eats eggs, meat, fish and whole grains on a regular basis. You should also give your mother fresh fruits and plenty of vegetables. Regular check ups by the doctor are also an essential part of ensuring that your mother's bed sores don't get worse. If your mother already has bed sores, tend them with care to ensure that they heal quickly. Clean the dressings regularly and keep the skin there completely dry.
