The term "perm" is an abbreviated form of the word "permanent", as it stands for a process through which the shape and the structure of hair are mechanically and chemically changed on a long-term basis. Frequently, perming involves blow-drying the hair and using hot tongs or curlers on it. Thus, perming exposes the hair to strong chemicals, heat and pressure as a result of which it loses its natural ability to retain moisture and becomes frizzy. Hair also becomes coarse and brittle due to perming as it dehydrates the hair cuticle. This may lead to split ends, partial graying in a few cases and eventually even hair loss. Besides, permed hair hardly ever gets back to its original shape as its effects are more or less permanent.

A few simple measures can be taken to counter the harmful effects of improper perming. Massaging the hair and the scalp with warm coconut oil daily increases blood circulation and gives your hair a natural glow. The massage should be vigorous, but not violent, so that the roots of the hair are nourished without getting injured. Instead of washing your hair every day, use a mixture of apple cider vinegar and water to wash your hair every alternate day. This makes the hair look light and glowing. Comb your hair only after it dries out. Use a wide-toothed brush and never use your fingers to get rid of hair tangles. This injures the hair and makes it weaker from the roots. Do not dry your hair by rubbing it vigorously with a towel as this will weaken the hair root. Always wrap a dry towel around your hair after you wash it and let it soak in the excessive water from the hair and the scalp. This will prevent your hair from looking frizzy. It is also advisable to use warm water while shampooing your hair as this opens up hair cuticles and allows the conditioner to seep into the roots of the hair. Once the conditioner has been applied, rinse it off with cool water, as this ensures that the hair cuticles close again and trap the necessary moisture. This is an effective way of remedying frizzy hair. Aloe vera is known to be a natural moisturizer. Apply an Aloe Vera based conditioner or hair cream to your hair and wrap a warm damp towel around your head. Keep it on for about 20 minutes and then wash your hair as usual. This is a very effective method to deep condition your hair and replenish lost fatty acids and essential nutrients.
