The hair follicles contain sebaceous glands that produce a natural oil called sebum, which is responsible for giving hair its natural softness and glow. When sebum is produced inadequately, hair becomes dry and lackluster. Hair also loses its natural moisture content due to overexposure to the sun, use of chemical products and excessive washing.

You can use natural oils on dry hair to make it look softer and shinier. Jojoba oil, whose molecules have a structure similar to those of sebum, is especially effective on dry hair when applied and left overnight. Other varieties of natural oil that prevent dryness of hair are emu oil, almond oil, rosemary oil, avocado oil, shea oil, wheat germ oil, plantain oil, nettle oil, burdock oil, etc. All of them nourish the hair follicles and the scalp as they are rich sources of vital nutrients and vitamins. You could also mix any of these oils with some honey and apply it to your hair, as honey is a natural moisturizing agent. Honey mixed with warm water can also be applied directly on your hair after shampooing and then washed away. Castor oil, coconut oil, lavender oil and olive oil are all good for blood circulation in the scalp, so a regular application of any of these is effective in countering dry hair. You may also add the yolk of an egg into a cup of warm water and then mix it with the egg white and apply it on wet hair. Rinse your hair well after sometime. Adding a pinch of baking soda to the shampoo you use can also be of help. Tomato is a rich source of vitamin C, which revitalizes the scalp, so tomato pulp or juice should be applied regularly to your hair and scalp to make it look shinier. Mayonnaise is also known to be a natural moisturizing agent, so if you have dry or damaged hair this would be a perfect moisturizer. The pulp of an over-ripe banana mixed with avocado paste can also be applied as banana is rich in various vitamins while avocado contains several essential fatty acids. Leave this hair mask in for at least 30 minutes and then wash it off with cold water for naturally soft and silky hair. Another excellent natural conditioner can be made by mixing rosemary oil, sandalwood powder, olive oil and aloe vera gel. Leave this mixture in your hair for at least an hour before washing. This mask will moisturize your hair and makes it less brittle. Besides these measures, include more green vegetables, fruits and water in your regular diet for healthier hair.
