Perm lotion can certainly harm your eyes - these are very strong chemicals, and they can do a lot of damage. Some perms use ammonium thioglycolate, others use sodium thioglycolate, while still others use glycerol monothioglycolate (what is known as an acid perm), and sometimes hydrogen peroxide is also used. These are all chemicals that should be used very carefully, and you should ensure that they do not get into your eyes. In fact, perm lotion is not even good for the skin - it is generally advisable to avoid contact of the lotion with skin completely if possible. The perm lotion should only be in contact with the hair, and contact with the scalp or with other skin should be completely avoided. This is of course not always very practical, but the point is that contact with skin should be at the bare minimum.

Even when used on hair, perm lotion needs to be used very carefully. It is therefore best to get it done by an experienced professional. If an inexperienced person uses the lotion, there is a good chance that they will make a mistake with something, which will end up damaging the hair. Typically, perm lotions work by breaking the disulfide bonds within the hair - these bonds give hair elasticity and structure. When the bonds are broken, hair can be given a different shape, after which the disulfide bonds are closed and the hair remains permanently in the form that has been given - in this case, curls. There are several things that can go wrong with this process, beginning with not understanding the person's hair properly, as a result of which the lotion used may be too much or too harsh. These and many other mistakes will end up damaging the hair, and can also end up irritating the scalp.

Similarly, if perm lotion comes into contact with the eyes it can cause rather severe irritation. In most cases, it will not do any permanent damage, but it is always better to be on the safe side. If you have happened to get some perm lotion in your eyes, the first thing you should do is of course wash it out. Flush your eyes with plain water for at least five minutes. After this, you should make an appointment with your ophthalmologist at the earliest, especially if your eyes stay irritated or your vision seems to be affected. Even if this does not happen, it is better to get your eyes checked and rule out any permanent damage.
