Scarring and hyperpigmentation due to peeling, harmful effects of Obagi Blue Peel treatment

I had Obagi Blue Peel about 8 years ago, the peel left scarring and darkened pigment around my mouth. My doctor told it could be permanent. Any suggestions?

It is a great pity that this treatment that you underwent left you with such scarring. I am not aware about exactly what the facial peel you underwent involves, so it is difficult to say exactly what kind of scarring you have. You mention darkening of the skin, and when this happens after inflammation, it is usually what is known as post inflammatory hyperpigmentation. What happens is that an infection or any other kind of inflammation damages the cells in the skin, and causes them to produce excessive amounts of the pigment melanin, which, as you know, gives skin its color. The more melanin there is in the skin, the darker it appears, and so these patches of skin are darker than the surrounding, normal skin that was unaffected by any inflammation or infection. This kind of hyperpigmentation is often seen with pimples - often, what people call pimple scars are really spots of post inflammatory hyperpigmentation. True scars are formed by scar tissue, or possibly by loss of tissue (as in the case of crater like pimple scars).

Post inflammatory hyperpigmentation does not usually last for very long. It of course depends upon how severely the inflammation affected the skin cells, but even if the damage was severe, the dark patches should fade within a few years. In your case, it has already been eight years since this incident occurred, and unfortunately, this would seem to indicate that the scarring is permanent. We can provide you with a few treatment suggestions that can be done at home, but it is quite likely that you have already tried them. Using honey, aloe, sandalwood powder, lemon and so on may work with milder skin problems, but in your case more intensive treatment is needed. The only possible option seems to be cosmetic procedures such as dermabrasion or laser treatment, if you haven't tried them already. These treatments are successful in most cases, although they are expensive and may have other drawbacks too. Ensure that you consult with a qualified and experienced skin specialist or cosmetic surgeon and find out all your options, including details as the cost, recovery time, and any possible side effects. In the meanwhile, you should ideally avoid trying any products that are on the market. Some of these are meant for milder skin problems, so for you they will only be a waste of money; more importantly however, some of these products can be dangerous.
