Dark spots and patches on the skin are a result of hyperpigmentation. Sometimes these marks darken with age. Stress, dietary imbalances and overexposure to sun may also cause this problem. There are a few simple home remedies to treat this condition.

Aloe vera is an effective lightening agent. Apply aloe vera gel followed by a sunscreen lotion before stepping outdoors. Vinegar is also a natural bleaching agent which lightens the tone of the skin and makes it naturally softer. A dilute solution of water and vinegar can be used as a natural face cleanser. After rinsing your face with this solution, do not towel-dry it, instead let your face dry naturally. This helps retain moisture in the skin and tones it up too. Instead of using the regular distilled white vinegar, you can also use apple cider or other varieties of vinegar for similar results. The raw juice of potatoes is also known to reduce dark spots. Peel a potato or mash it well and rub it gently on your cheeks. Wash your face after the skin has soaked in the juice completely. Onion juice also acts similarly on dark spots. Grate an onion finely or simply pulp it to extract its juice, mix it with an equal portion of apple cider vinegar, soak a piece of cotton wool in this solution and dab your cheeks with it. Repeat this process twice a day for a couple of weeks for best results. You could also cut a thin slice out of an onion, dip it in the vinegar and then rub it gently over the pigmented area. Just like onion, lemon is also acidic in nature so it naturally removes dead skin cells, leaving the skin look lighter. Apply the juice of a fresh lemon on your cheeks every day to reduce dark spots. A solution made by adding onion and lemon juice to vinegar is also very effective in reducing pigmentation. Make a face pack using milk powder, lemon juice, almond oil and honey in the same quantity and apply it on your cheeks. Wash it off after 15-20 minutes. You can keep this face pack in your refrigerator for several days and use it daily to lighten dark spots significantly. You can also make a cream made of powdered oatmeal mixed with yoghurt, lime juice and tomato juice and apply it on your cheeks. Wash your face with cold water after half an hour.
