Split ends, as the name suggests, occur when the tips of individual strands of hair split. The technical term that is used for this condition is trichoptilosis. Split ends can make your hair look terrible, and the only way to get rid of them is to cut your hair. Unfortunately, there is no way to "fix" your hair once it has been damaged in this way. The only thing to do is to cut off the damaged portion of your hair, and the earlier you do this, the better it will be. If the damaged portions are cut off in the early stages, the damage will not spread further down the shaft towards the root. The longer you wait, the more your hair will split. You will at some point of time be forced to cut your hair, but you will then need to cut still more than you would right now. If you cut your hair right now, you can probably get away with cutting just a little bit - possibly only the tips.

Once you have cut off the damaged portions of the hair, you should be extra careful with your hair in order to avoid developing split ends again. Split ends are usually the result of excessive heat or chemicals, or, in some cases, simply being too rough with your hair. Excessive heat is usually due to using a hair dryer too often, or frequently undergoing hair treatments that involve the use of heat. The same goes for chemical causes of split ends. All heat and chemical treatments stress the hair, and, if used too frequently, will end up causing split ends and breakage. If you use such treatments, you should avoid doing so more than a couple of times a year. However, if you have very delicate hair, then a single treatment may also be enough to cause damage.

You should also be very careful when combing or brushing your hair. Most people use too much force when combing and brushing, and this can break hair or cause split ends. You should never use a comb or brush on your hair when it is wet, and even when dry, your movements should be slow and steady. If your hair is tangled, you should detangle it with your fingers and then continue combing or brushing. Never use the comb or brush to detangle your hair, as this will almost certainly cause some hairs to break.
